Journalist further remanded in custody

By Staff Reporter
Journalist Gideon Madzikatidze has been remanded in custody until 23 February 2026 after briefly appearing before Harare Magistrate Ruth Moyo on 20 February 2026. He was arrested on 18 February and detained at Harare Central Police Station.

Madzikatidze faces two charges: contravening Section 7(1), as read with subsection 4(b), of the Broadcasting Services Act [Chapter 12:06] for allegedly providing a broadcasting service without a licence; and cyber‑bullying as defined under Section 164B of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act [Chapter 9:23].

The State alleges that between 15 and 16 December 2025, Madzikatidze unlawfully conducted internet broadcasting services through a Bulawayo24 News website without the required licence.

On the second count, prosecutors claim he intentionally posted a data message on the Bulawayo24 website alleging that the Geo‑Pomona boss bribed journalists and editors to evade scrutiny. The State argues the message was intended to intimidate, harass, bully, and cause substantial emotional distress to Geo‑Pomona Waste Management Company and its chief executive officer.

His lawyer, Godwin Giya, told the court they could not immediately apply for bail due to a heavy roll. The bail application is set to be heard on Monday, 23 February 2026.

Meanwhile, MISA Zimbabwe reminded journalists that if they are injured, detained or arrested while on duty, they can call the organisation’s 24/7 SOS hotline on 0784 437 338 for legal or medical assistance.

“Don’t forget to save the number in your phone for emergencies,” MISA said.
