Orlando Pirates have confirmed that exciting winger Relebohile Mofokeng is on the verge of completing a move to Belgian Pro League outfit Royale Union Saint-Gilloise after the two clubs reached an agreement over his transfer.

The 21-year-old is now expected to undergo a medical examination and finalise personal terms before the deal is officially completed.

The announcement ends weeks of intense speculation over the future of one of South Africa’s brightest young footballers, who has been linked with several European clubs following an outstanding season for the Buccaneers and impressive displays on the international stage.

Deal was agreed before World Cup
Orlando Pirates also revealed that the transfer had effectively been wrapped up before the start of the FIFA World Cup, but both clubs agreed to keep the deal under wraps.

According to the Soweto giants, the decision was taken to allow Mofokeng to focus entirely on representing Bafana Bafana during the tournament without the distraction of transfer speculation.

The club said both parties wanted the national team’s memorable World Cup campaign to remain the centre of attention before announcing the move.

Final formalities remain
In a statement released on Wednesday, Pirates said negotiations over the transfer fee and structure of the deal had been successfully concluded.

However, the transfer will only become official once Mofokeng passes his medical and agrees personal terms with Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

The club added that no further comment would be made until every aspect of the transfer process has been finalised.

Reward for a breakthrough campaign
A move to Belgium marks a significant milestone in Mofokeng’s career after emerging as one of the Premier Soccer League’s standout performers.

The talented winger enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with Orlando Pirates, earning widespread praise for his creativity, pace and attacking flair. His performances also helped him cement a place in the Bafana Bafana squad, further boosting his growing reputation.

Should the remaining formalities be completed successfully, Mofokeng will become the latest South African talent to take the next step in Europe, with Pirates hoping the transfer will open another chapter in the club’s proud tradition of producing players capable of competing on the international stage.
