EU Lifts Sanctions on Zimbabwe, Renews Arms Embargo Until 2027

By Desmond Nleya
The European Union has lifted all remaining sanctions on Zimbabwe, while extending its arms embargo on the country for another year.

In a decision adopted by the Council of the European Union, the bloc confirmed that the arms embargo will remain in force until 20 February 2027. At the same time, it removed all provisions related to potential travel bans and asset freezes, effectively ending the last of its targeted restrictive measures against Zimbabwean individuals and entities.

The EU said it remains constructively engaged with Zimbabwe and is prepared to deepen bilateral relations across a broad range of areas of mutual interest, including trade and investment. It added that it will continue to monitor developments in the country and assess the effectiveness of the remaining measures in light of future events.

The restrictive measures were first introduced on 15 February 2011 in response to the political situation in Zimbabwe, replacing an earlier sanctions framework that had been in place since 18 February 2002. Over the years, the measures have been gradually reviewed, adjusted and, in many cases, eased.

The latest Council Decision and Council Implementing Regulation formalise the extension of the arms embargo, with the EU citing the prevailing situation in Zimbabwe as justification for maintaining restrictions on the supply of military equipment.
