The High Court has rejected the appeal bid of jailed businessmen Moses Mpofu and Mike Chimombe, confirming their convictions for defrauding the Government of over US$7 million. In a judgment issued today, Justice Pisirayi Kwenda stated that the trial court had adhered to appropriate sentencing guidelines, concluding that any potential errors in the proceedings inadvertently benefited the accused.
Justice Kwenda affirmed that both applications for leave to appeal were dismissed. He also pointed out that the State had accepted the sentences imposed on Mpofu and Chimombe, who are currently serving 17 and 12 years in prison, respectively, for their roles in the fraudulent Presidential Goat Pass-On Scheme.
