Kudakwashe Tagwirei Among 10 New Senators Appointed By Mnangagwa
By Staff Reporter
Kudakwashe Tagwirei has been appointed as one of 10 additional senators by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, in a move that brings the prominent businessman and ZANU PF Central Committee member into Zimbabwe’s upper house. Parliament announced the appointments on Tuesday, 18 August 2026.
Tagwirei was named alongside Jabulani Sibanda, Godwills Masimirembwa, Mary Mliswa, Nokuthula Matsikenyere, Lucy Chitaga, retired General Gibson Mashingaidze, Makosini Hlongwane, Brilliant Dube and Irene Mutumba.
Tagwirei Among New Senate Appointees
National Assembly Speaker Jacob Mudenda announced the appointments during Tuesday’s sitting.
Mudenda said Mnangagwa had consulted the National Assembly before making the appointments.
“After consultation with the National Assembly, I have to inform the House that His Excellency, the President, is desirous of appointing the following as senators.”
The appointments were made under new provisions introduced through Constitutional Amendment No. 3 (CAA3).
New Powers Behind Senate Appointments
CAA3 provides for the President to directly appoint additional senators. Tuesday’s announcement therefore marked the implementation of that new provision.
Tagwirei’s appointment is likely to attract particular attention because of his prominent role within ZANU PF and his profile in Zimbabwean business circles.
The other appointees include political figures, former public officials and retired military personnel, giving the new group a varied background.
What Happens Next
The 10 appointments add new members to Zimbabwe’s Senate following the constitutional changes introduced under CAA3.
With Tagwirei among those appointed, attention will now turn to his role in the upper house and how the newly appointed senators will participate in parliamentary business.
