Kariba Boat Tragedy: Death Toll Rises to 92 as Government Seeks Help Identifying Six Bodies

The death toll from the Lake Kariba boat disaster has risen to **92**, with the Government appealing to members of the public to help identify six bodies that remain unidentified.

The latest figures follow the recovery of eight additional bodies after authorities had earlier reported 84 recovered victims. Sixty-seven survivors have also been accounted for as search and recovery operations continue.

Government Appeals for Assistance

Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Marian Chombo made the appeal on Monday, August 17, saying authorities were struggling to identify six of the recovered bodies.

Chombo urged relatives and members of the community who may have information about missing people to come forward and assist with the identification process.

“We have about six bodies which have not been identified,” Chombo said, appealing to the public to help authorities establish the identities of the victims.

The identification process is expected to help authorities account for missing passengers and assist families searching for their loved ones.

## Investigation Into the Disaster

The Government has launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.

Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona visited the accident scene on Sunday, August 16, where he also met operators of boats and ferries operating on Lake Kariba.

Preliminary findings are reportedly examining several possible contributing factors, including navigational errors, suspected overloading and failure to respond adequately to adverse weather warnings.

The vessel involved in the accident, which was owned by the Rural Infrastructure Development Authority (RIDA), capsized near Long Island.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has since declared the tragedy a **state of disaster**, while a technical report on the incident was expected to be presented to Cabinet on Tuesday, August 18.

## Search and Recovery Efforts Continue

Search and recovery operations remain underway as authorities continue working to account for victims and support affected families.

The identification of the remaining bodies remains a priority, while investigators work to establish exactly what caused the vessel to capsize and determine whether safety regulations were breached.

The Kariba tragedy has become one of Zimbabwe's deadliest recent water-related disasters, prompting renewed attention on passenger safety, vessel capacity and emergency preparedness on Lake Kariba.
