HARARE — Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have confirmed that investigations are underway following a firearm incident and an alleged assault case that occurred during and after a schools rugby match between Eaglesvale College and Christian Brothers College (CBC) in Harare.
In a statement released on Sunday, police confirmed the matter had been formally reported and is now under investigation.Local News
“The ZRP confirms that investigations are currently underway in connection with a firearm incident and Assault case which occurred at Eaglesvale College, Harare on 13th June 2026. The incident took place during a rugby match between Christian Brothers College (CBC) and Eaglesvale College. The ZRP urges calm among parents, students, administrators and stakeholders as police investigations continue,” police said.
The confirmation follows reports that tensions flared after Eaglesvale secured a dramatic 14-13 victory over CBC in a tightly contested schools rugby encounter.
According to eyewitness accounts circulating on social media, scenes of disorder erupted after the final whistle, with some supporters allegedly invading the pitch amid anger over the result.
Witnesses claimed that players and match officials became targets during the disturbance, while one parent was allegedly seen producing a firearm before being restrained by other spectators.
The alleged weapon incident has sparked widespread concern among parents, rugby supporters and education stakeholders, with many questioning safety arrangements at school sporting events.
The match itself had been one of the most competitive fixtures of the weekend, with Eaglesvale edging CBC by a single point in a contest that remained in the balance until the closing moments.Air Zimbabwe flights
However, what should have been a celebration of schoolboy rugby was overshadowed by the post-match disorder.
Sports commentator Mr Tich, who drew attention to the incident online, described the scenes as disturbing and warned against growing levels of parental interference in youth sports.
Photographs and videos shared online appeared to show heightened emotions following the final whistle as players, officials and spectators became caught up in the confrontation.
The alleged involvement of a firearm has elevated the seriousness of the matter, prompting calls for stronger security measures at schools sporting fixtures.
Zimbabwe’s schools rugby system has long been regarded as one of the country’s premier talent development pathways, producing generations of players who have gone on to represent clubs and national teams.
Observers say incidents of violence and intimidation risk damaging the reputation of the sport and undermining the values of discipline, respect and sportsmanship traditionally associated with rugby.
Police have not yet announced any arrests or charges in connection with the incident.
Investigations are continuing, with further updates expected as authorities establish the full circumstances surrounding the disturbance.
Parents, school authorities and rugby stakeholders have meanwhile been urged to remain calm and allow the investigative process to take its course.
