Mount Nyangani: Zimbabwe’s Mountain of Mysteries, Legends and Unanswered Disappearances
Source: . Masimba Mavaza
Nyanga-Rising majestically to 2,592 metres above sea level, Mount Nyangani stands as Zimbabwe’s highest peak and one of the most breathtaking landmarks in the Eastern Highlands. Yet beyond its beauty lies a mystery that has fascinated, frightened, and puzzled generations.
For decades, the mountain has been associated with unexplained disappearances, ancient spiritual beliefs, and more recently, extraordinary claims linking it to extraterrestrial activity. Whether viewed through the lens of science, folklore, or faith, Mount Nyangani remains one of Zimbabwe’s most intriguing natural wonders.
A Trail of Vanished Lives
Over the years, several people have disappeared on Mount Nyangani, some without leaving behind a single trace.
Among the most widely documented cases are:
**1981:** Two teenage daughters of former Finance Minister Dr. Tichaendepi Masaya disappeared during a family hiking trip. Despite extensive searches, neither their bodies nor any belongings were ever recovered.
1986:** Eight-year-old Robert Ackhurst vanished while visiting the mountain with his family. Search teams combed the area for days, but no evidence of his whereabouts was ever found.
2014: Tourist Zayd Dada disappeared while hiking near Mutarazi Falls with his wife and friends. His shoes, jacket, and mobile phone were later discovered, but he was never seen again.
Local guides and residents also speak of other missing hikers, porters, gold panners, and schoolchildren whose stories never reached national headlines. Some are said to have simply "walked into the mist" and never returned.
## The Alien Base Theory
The mystery surrounding Mount Nyangani gained renewed international attention after former CIA remote viewer Lyn Buchanan claimed during an appearance on the American Alchemy podcast that the mountain had been identified as one of four global locations associated with extraterrestrial activity during the Cold War-era Stargate Project.
The Stargate Project, conducted by the United States government between the 1970s and 1995, explored the controversial concept of "remote viewing" — the alleged ability to mentally perceive distant locations.
According to Buchanan, Mount Nyangani emerged as a site of unusual interest during several remote-viewing sessions. However, no evidence was presented to support the claim, and no scientific study or official government report has ever verified the existence of extraterrestrial activity on the mountain.
While the story quickly spread across social media platforms, experts maintain that remote viewing remains scientifically unproven and cannot be regarded as factual evidence.
The Scientific Explanation
Before turning to theories involving spirits or extraterrestrials, mountain rescue experts point to several natural hazards that make Mount Nyangani particularly dangerous.
### Sudden and Severe Weather
Weather conditions can change dramatically within minutes. Thick fog, freezing rain, and powerful winds exceeding 100 kilometres per hour can reduce visibility to just a few metres, leaving even experienced hikers disoriented.
Dangerous Terrain
The mountain features steep slopes, deep ravines, slippery granite surfaces, and towering waterfalls, including Mutarazi Falls, one of Africa's highest waterfalls. A single misstep can lead to fatal consequences.
Hypothermia
Temperatures can drop below freezing, especially when combined with strong winds. Hypothermia can impair judgment rapidly, causing victims to become confused and unable to make rational decisions.
### Loss of Direction
Outside the main hiking routes, there are few marked trails. Mobile phone reception is unreliable, and hikers who wander even a short distance from established paths can quickly become lost in dense vegetation and heavy mist.
These factors account for many disappearances on mountains worldwide. Yet for families who never recover their loved ones, natural explanations often provide little comfort.
The Legend of Mbuya Nyangani
Long before modern theories emerged, local communities believed the mountain was protected by **Mbuya Nyangani**, the revered spirit guardian of the mountain.
According to Shona tradition, Mbuya Nyangani watches over the forests, controls the weather, and punishes those who show disrespect toward the sacred landscape.
Stories passed down through generations tell of:
* Travellers who mocked the mountain and became lost in sudden mist.
* Visitors who removed stones, plants, or natural objects and were unable to find their way home.
* A mysterious doorway within the rocks that opens only to the worthy and remains closed to the greedy.
Whether interpreted as literal spiritual encounters or as traditional wisdom designed to teach respect for nature, these stories share a common message: Mount Nyangani demands humility.
## A Mountain That Keeps Its Secrets
Perhaps the greatest tragedy surrounding Mount Nyangani is not the disappearances themselves, but the uncertainty left behind.
Families continue to live without answers, without graves to visit, and without the closure that comes from knowing what happened to their loved ones.
Maybe there are no alien bases hidden beneath the mountain.
Maybe there is no supernatural force pulling people into the mist.
Or perhaps Mount Nyangani serves as a reminder that nature still possesses mysteries beyond our complete understanding.
In an age of satellites, drones, and advanced technology, there remain places where a person can step into the fog and seemingly vanish from the world.
What is certain is that Mount Nyangani remains a place of awe, beauty, spirituality, and profound mystery. Its stories continue to captivate Zimbabweans and visitors alike, ensuring that those who disappeared are never forgotten.
Until science, history, or perhaps even spirit provides definitive answers, Mount Nyangani will continue to stand silently above the clouds—guarding its secrets and watching over the Eastern Highlands as it has done for centuries.
