GOKWE YOUTH JAILED 15 YEARS FOR RAPING HIS AUNT
GOKWE –** An 18-year-old man from Gokwe South has been sentenced to an effective 15 years in prison after being convicted of raping his 42-year-old aunt in a disturbing case that has shocked the local community.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the offence occurred on 16 May 2026 as the victim and the offender were travelling to a neighbouring village to seek casual employment.
Prosecutors told the court that at around 5:00 AM, the teenager suddenly attacked the woman while they were walking together. He allegedly grabbed her by the neck and tripped her to the ground before forcing himself on her.
The victim reportedly resisted and fought back, but the accused overpowered her.
The attack was interrupted when a passerby heard screams and distress calls coming from nearby bushes. The witness rushed to the scene and allegedly caught the offender in the act.
After rescuing the victim, the passerby assisted her and ensured that the matter was reported to the police.
The report led to the immediate arrest of the accused, who was subsequently prosecuted and convicted.
In a statement released on 2 June 2026, the NPAZ said the swift intervention by the witness played a crucial role in bringing the offender to justice.
Following the conviction, the court sentenced the teenager to an effective 15-year prison term.
The National Prosecuting Authority has since reiterated its commitment to combating sexual violence and warned that offenders will continue to face the full force of the law.
Authorities have also urged members of the public to promptly report cases of sexual abuse and gender-based violence to help ensure perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted.
