Zimbabwe Military Officer Major General Herbert Chingono Dies

Zimbabwe is mourning the death of senior military officer Herbert Chingono, whose passing was confirmed by his family on Monday.

Chingono, a decorated member of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, was widely regarded by colleagues and associates as one of the most professional and principled officers to serve in the country’s military.

In a statement, family members described him as a humble leader, intellectual and patriot who dedicated much of his life to the service of Zimbabwe.

“Above all else he was a deep thinker, a principled patriot, an encourager and a reluctant hero,” the family said in a tribute. “In many of his assignments he quietly did the work and allowed others to take the glory so long as progress was made and the nation benefited.”

Chingono belonged to the generation of Zimbabweans who took part in the country’s struggle and subsequent efforts to build a nation founded on civil liberties, peace and development.

Those who worked closely with him described him as calm, approachable and deeply committed to mentoring younger officers, often preferring influence and guidance over public recognition.

“He led quietly, influenced greatly and thought widely,” the family said.

The family also described him as coming from a patriotic lineage devoted to both faith and national service, adding that his leadership and sacrifice represented the best of Zimbabwe’s traditions.

“We have lost a good one. Go well and find rest, storied son of the soil,” the tribute read.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
