In a tragic development, a pilot died after a small plane he was travelling in with his wife crashed in Masvingo Province.

The aircraft went down in Nyoka Village, a remote mountainous area situated between Zaka and Bikita districts, about 85 kilometres southeast of Masvingo.

Residents in the area said they saw the plane go down before flames engulfed part of the wreckage.

Woman Survives with Broken Legs
The aircraft was carrying the pilot and his wife when the crash occurred.

Witnesses said both occupants were still alive immediately after the aircraft hit the ground. However, the situation quickly worsened when a fire broke out in the wreckage.

The pilot reportedly became trapped inside the aircraft and suffered severe burns that extended from the lower part of his body up to his chest. He died before rescuers could pull him from the wreckage.

His wife survived but sustained serious injuries, including broken legs. She was taken to hospital for treatment, although details about her condition have not yet been released.

Some witnesses said the woman appeared to have been thrown clear of the aircraft moments before the impact, which may have prevented her from being caught in the flames.

Debris Scattered Across Crash Scene
Images and video recorded at the scene showed wreckage from the small aircraft scattered among trees and dense grass in the area.

Sections of the plane were torn apart on impact, while part of the fuselage continued burning as villagers gathered at the crash site.

Authorities Launch Investigation
Authorities have begun investigating the cause of the crash.

Officials from the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) travelled to the area to examine the wreckage and gather information from witnesses.

Some villagers claimed the couple may be from Australia, although authorities have not yet confirmed their identities. Investigations are expected to determine what led to the fatal accident.
