A South Africa-based man was brutally attacked by a gang of armed robbers who stabbed him three times before making off with R900,000 and other valuables at Khandamhlope Village in Madlambuzi, Matabeleland South.
Eight suspects have since been arrested in connection with the robbery, while two others remain at large.
Police confirmed that R239,120 has been recovered from the arrested suspects.
Five of the suspects have been identified as Listen Ngwenya (25), Admire Chimondoro (38), Njabulo Ncube (27), and Kholisani Moyo (33), all from Madlambuzi. Delight Sibanda (19) is from Mpoyi Village.
Authorities say Bakisai Sibanda and Ntsuna Sibanda are still on the run.
Detective Assistant Inspector Merylin Muriro, deputy spokesperson for the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), confirmed the arrests.
“Eight individuals have been arrested for robbery in Madlambuzi,” said Det-Ass-Insp Muriro.
She explained that the suspects allegedly forced their way into the victim’s home while he was asleep. They stabbed him three times and demanded cash and valuables he had brought from South Africa.
During the ordeal, the victim initially handed over a small box containing an undisclosed amount of money. However, the assailants demanded more cash, prompting him to reveal a bucket hidden beneath the floor which contained additional funds — all in South African rand.
Besides the cash, the robbers stole two 20-litre containers of paint and Samsung and Honor smartphones, although the phones did not have SIM cards.
The victim was later kidnapped and taken to the house of one of the suspects.
Investigations are ongoing.
