Thomas “Mukanya” Mapfumo has confirmed that he received his full performance fees for the two Harare shows he was contracted to perform, despite the postponement of Jah Prayzah’s wedding following Wicknell Chivayo’s death.
The Chimurenga music legend was among the artistes hired by Chivayo as part of a reported US$1 million deal connected to the wedding celebrations.
Chivayo died in a helicopter crash on Wednesday, resulting in the postponement of the wedding ceremony indefinitely.
Speaking to H-Metro, Mapfumo said his contractual obligations remained in place and that he intended to return to Zimbabwe once a new date for the event had been confirmed.
“I can confirm that l was paid in full for the work l was supposed to do and l will honour my contract of work.
“At the moment l don’t have much to say as l am still in shock with the death of Wicknell.
“May the Lord comfort his family and his loved ones,” Mukanya said.
Mapfumo said he would return to the United States while arrangements for the rescheduled event were being made.
“I will go back to America and will definitely be back for the show.
“My team is making new arrangements with all the involved stakeholders and l think we will have a clear picture after the burials.”
Mapfumo’s publicist, Cuthbert Chiromo, also confirmed that the singer’s team was already communicating with Jah Prayzah’s management regarding a new date.
“Mukanya was paid in full and right now l am in touch with Jah Prayzah’s management for new dates and definitely, Mukanya will perform,” he said.
The new date for the wedding and the associated performances has not yet been announced.
