Harare – Staff members from the Centre for Development Studies (CDS) this week visited students from the Occupational Health and Safety Supervision program who are currently undertaking their industrial attachment at Broadhaven Construction Company in Dzivarasekwa.
The purpose of the visit was to assess the students’ practical knowledge and professional growth after completing six months of hands-on industrial training.
The assessment forms part of CDS’s ongoing efforts to ensure that students not only gain theoretical knowledge in the classroom but also apply it effectively in real-world environments.
Speaking during the visit, the CDS Head of Department, Mr Nhlalo Bhebhe commended the students for their discipline, professionalism, and dedication to workplace safety standards.
“It is encouraging to see our students demonstrating both competence and confidence in applying the safety procedures and supervisory skills they learned at college. This is exactly the kind of practical exposure we aim for,” he said.
At Broadhaven Construction, the students have been involved in a wide range of tasks including risk assessment, site inspections, hazard control, and enforcement of occupational safety protocols.
Students also expressed gratitude to both CDS and Broadhaven Construction for providing them with a valuable learning platform. One of the trainees, highlighted that the attachment period had deepened her understanding of construction site dynamics and improved her communication and leadership skills.
“This experience has taught me how critical safety supervision is in preventing workplace injuries and ensuring productivity,” she said.
The visit concluded with a brief evaluation session where CDS staff interacted with both supervisors and students to review performance reports and provide guidance for the remaining attachment period.
