Chivayo Proposes Benjani Mwaruwari as Highlanders Head Coach, Pledges Full Personal Funding
By Desmond Nleya
Businessman Wicknell Chivayo has revealed that former Warriors captain Benjani Mwaruwari is willing to take up the Highlanders FC head coach position—on condition that Chivayo personally guarantees his full contractual package.
Chivayo said he recently hosted Benjani and Harlington Shereni for breakfast, during which discussions turned to the coaching vacancy at Bosso. He said Benjani expressed interest in the job after consulting his family, adding that the former Manchester City striker “would consider the role if all his contractual interests are personally secured.”
Chivayo confirmed he has formally submitted a proposal to the Highlanders leadership for their internal consideration. He pledged that, outside his existing US$1 million donation, he would:
Personally fund Benjani’s entire salary and benefits for the full duration of the contract.
Provide the coach with a brand-new car of his choice.
Continue availing the initial sponsorship package for player signings in the 2026 season.
He clarified that if Highlanders opt for a different coach, the general sponsorship remains, but “the additional conditions would not apply.”
Chivayo said Benjani’s global football experience and deep understanding of Zimbabwean football make him an ideal fit for Highlanders, arguing that repeated reliance on foreign coaches “has not produced the desired results.”
Highlanders FC is yet to officially respond to the proposal.
