Job Sikhala Granted R10,000 Bail in Explosives Case

PRETORIA — The Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on Thursday granted Job Silhala bail of R10,000 following his arrest on charges related to the alleged possession and handling of explosives.

Sikhala, who appeared calm and composed during the proceedings, faces serious allegations under South Africa’s Explosives Act, which governs the unlawful possession, transportation, and use of explosive materials. According to prosecutors, the charges stem from an incident earlier this year in which authorities reportedly discovered explosive substances at a site linked to the accused.

State prosecutors initially opposed bail, arguing that Silhala posed a potential flight risk and that the matter involved public safety concerns. However, the court ruled in favour of bail, noting that there was insufficient evidence to suggest that Silhala would evade trial or interfere with witnesses.

In delivering her ruling, the magistrate emphasized that the presumption of innocence remains intact until proven guilty. She also imposed strict bail conditions, including regular check-ins at the nearest police station and a restriction on traveling outside the province without notifying authorities.

Silhala is expected to return to court on February 3, 2026, when the case will resume for further pretrial proceedings.

Legal analysts say the case is likely to attract continued public and media attention given the sensitive nature of the charges and the potential implications under national security laws.

Neither Silhala nor his legal representatives have made a public statement following the court’s decision.
