ZANU PF spokesperson Ambassador Christopher Mutsvangwa today clarified the party’s position regarding President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s political future, stressing that the Head of State has not yet made any decision on whether he will seek to remain in office beyond 2028.
He was speaking at a press conference at the Party's Headquarters in Harare.
Mutsvangwa referenced Resolution Number 1 adopted at the recent ZANU PF Annual National People’s Conference in Bulawayo, where delegates unanimously affirmed that President Mnangagwa remains the leader of Zimbabwe up to 2030. However, he emphasized that while the party endorsed continuity, the final decision rests with the President, who will determine his next steps closer to the 2027 ZANU PF Congress.
“The decision of the President in 2027 will decide where the Party will go, as we have a Congress in 2027,” Mutsvangwa stated. He explained that although the party conference expressed overwhelming support for Mnangagwa’s leadership, the President alone holds the authority to declare whether he intends to serve until 2030.
The spokesperson criticized premature declarations by individuals attempting to position themselves as presidential candidates without the sanction of the party. Mutsvangwa argued that such moves undermine internal processes and violate party protocol.
“If you declare yourself as a candidate ahead of the Party itself—and the Party having not announced the availability of a vacancy in the Presidency—is totally wrong,” he said.
Mutsvangwa reiterated that ZANU PF operates through structured, constitutional channels, and any deviations from these processes threaten party unity. He stressed that until President Mnangagwa speaks directly on the matter, any speculation around 2030 remains unofficial and inappropriate.
As debates intensify within political circles, Mutsvangwa’s statement serves as a reminder that the ruling party maintains a strict hierarchy, and decisions—especially those concerning the presidency—must originate from the top.
For now, the nation awaits President Mnangagwa’s decision, which is expected to come closer to the 2027 elective Congress, a defining moment for both the party and the country's political future.
