Man sentenced to 30 years for raping 12-year-old girl

BINDURA - A 54-year-old man from Chiweshe has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after being convicted of raping a 12-year-old girl on two separate occasions.

Bothwell Katakure was jailed by Bindura magistrate Shellah Nazombe following a trial in which prosecutor Tracy Dube outlined the disturbing details of the case.

The court heard that in May, the victim's mother asked Katakure for vegetables. He advised her to send someone to collect them, and she sent her daughter. While in the garden, Katakure allegedly dragged the girl and raped her.
On June 4, the girl went to a makeshift bathroom to relieve herself when Katakure followed and raped her again.

The abuse came to light after the girl confided in her mother, who then reported the matter to the police. Katakure was arrested and later convicted.

The case has sparked renewed calls for stronger protections for children and harsher penalties for sexual offenders.
