Bus Carrying Foreign Nationals Overturns Near Beitbridge, Driver Killed And 11 Injured
A bus carrying foreign nationals overturned near the Beitbridge Border Post outside Musina in Limpopo on Wednesday, 1 July 2026, leaving the driver dead and 11 passengers injured.
The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) reported that the vehicle was transporting undocumented Malawian nationals to a repatriation centre in Musina after travelling from KwaZulu-Natal. Emergency services confirmed that the injured passengers were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Musina Repatriation Bus Crash Claims Driver’s Life
The crash occurred on the N1 outside Musina as the passengers were being transported for repatriation to Malawi.
Emergency services confirmed that the driver died at the scene, while 11 passengers sustained injuries.
Newzroom Afrika eporter Zakona Chona, speaking from the crash scene, described the aftermath and the condition of those travelling on the bus.
“The driver has been confirmed dead. Eleven people have been injured and they have been transported to a nearby hospital.”
She said many of the passengers had travelled hundreds of kilometres from KwaZulu-Natal before spending hours outside immigration offices in Musina waiting to be processed by the Department of Home Affairs.
Long Journey Took A Toll On Drivers And Passengers
Newzroom Afrika also reported that one of the drivers had spoken about the demanding nature of the repatriation route before the accident.
“He complained about the amount of time they are having to spend waiting and driving. He said that after arriving in Musina, he still had another thousand kilometres to drive to Malawi. He expressed that it was taking a toll on them.”
Chona said many of the travellers had fled their homes fearing possible unrest linked to events on 30 June. They reportedly spent the night in Musina while awaiting verification before boarding buses for Malawi.
She added that only a few belongings remained scattered around the crash scene.
“It is not much in terms of personal belongings. It shows how desperate the situation was when they were leaving their homes.”
Food parcels and baby supplies distributed by humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers could also be seen among the debris.
Investigation Underway After Fatal N1 Crash
The injured passengers were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Authorities had not announced the cause of the crash at the time of publication. The circumstances surrounding the fatal accident are expected to form part of an official investigation.
The tragedy unfolded during ongoing repatriation operations through the Beitbridge Border Post on Wednesday, 1 July 2026.
