Tragedy in Karoi: Two-Month-Old Baby Killed, Eight Learners Injured as Runaway Scooter Smashes Into Classroom

A two-month-old baby girl was killed and eight learners injured after a scooter towing a trailer reportedly suffered brake failure and crashed into an unfinished classroom block at a private school in Chikuti, Karoi.

The tragic incident occurred around midday on Friday, according to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).

Police said an unregistered DSM scooter, which was towing a trailer loaded with suspected gold ore, lost its brakes and reversed uncontrollably into the classroom structure where a teacher, learners, and the infant were gathered.

The impact caused parts of the unfinished building to collapse, trapping several people under the debris.

The infant sustained fatal injuries after becoming trapped beneath the scooter and falling rubble. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Eight learners were also injured in the accident and were rushed to Karoi District Hospital for treatment. Two of the injured pupils were later transferred to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital for specialised medical care. Authorities have not yet disclosed the extent of their injuries.

The heartbreaking incident has left parents, teachers, and community members in shock as emergency responders and police attended the scene.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has launched investigations to determine the full circumstances surrounding the accident, including how the scooter came to be operating near the school premises and whether negligence played a role in the tragedy.

Authorities are expected to provide further details as investigations continue.
