UFC Dream Ends As Zimbabwe’s Themba Gorimbo Announces Emotional Retirement From MMA
By Staff Reporter
Zimbabwean mixed martial arts fighter Themba Gorimbo has officially announced his retirement from MMA following a difficult run in the UFC, bringing an end to one of the sport’s most inspiring underdog journeys.
The 35-year-old welterweight confirmed the news in an emotional social media statement on Thursday after suffering three consecutive defeats inside the Octagon, including a split-decision loss to Jonathan Micallef at UFC Perth earlier this month.
In a heartbreaking message, Gorimbo admitted that walking away from the sport was painful, but said he could no longer continue after failing to achieve his lifelong ambition of becoming a UFC champion.
“Thank you to UFC and everyone. I dared to be someone and something and failed. Gave all I can in the sport and I am walking away from the sport,” Gorimbo wrote.
He added:
> “My dream was to be a UFC champion and if I cannot be that I am going to walk away from the sport. It’s not easy but I’ve tried.”
The announcement has sent shockwaves across the MMA community, with fans and fellow fighters paying tribute to a man whose rise from poverty to the UFC captured global attention.
Gorimbo retires with a professional MMA record of 14 wins and seven defeats, including a respectable 4-4 run in the UFC since joining the promotion in 2023.
From Homelessness To The UFC Spotlight
Gorimbo’s story became one of the most talked-about journeys in combat sports after he revealed that he once survived on just US$7 while chasing his UFC dream in the United States. During his early days, he reportedly slept in a room at the gym where he trained while struggling financially.
His determination and humility later caught the attention of Hollywood superstar Dwayne Johnson, who surprised the Zimbabwean fighter with a house in Florida after being moved by his life story and charity work back home in Zimbabwe.
Despite his own hardships, Gorimbo also earned widespread respect for attempting to auction his UFC fight gear to help fund a community water project in Zimbabwe.
Fans Hope For Future Return
Although Gorimbo has stepped away from active competition, he hinted that his journey in MMA may not be completely over.
> “Maybe I will make a comeback as a coach or manager someday but for now the focus will be my family,” he said.
Fans across social media have continued to encourage the fighter, praising him for inspiring countless young Africans by proving that it is possible to rise from adversity and compete on the world’s biggest MMA stage.
While his dream of UFC gold may have ended, Themba Gorimbo’s story of perseverance, sacrifice and resilience has already secured his place as one of Zimbabwe’s most inspirational sporting figures.
