ZiG Fuel Claims Spark Public Backlash as Zimbabweans Demand Proof
By Staff Reporter

A wave of skepticism has followed claims by a Zanu PF-aligned online activist that Zimbabwe’s newly introduced Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency can now be used to purchase fuel across the country.

Tinashe Sambiri reports that Cleopas Mukungunugwa ignited debate on Wednesday after posting on Facebook: *“ZIG IS NOW BUYING FUEL IN ZIMBABWE – IWE WOSVORA?”* The statement quickly drew widespread attention, but instead of affirmation, it was met with doubt and sharp questioning from the public.

Many Zimbabweans challenged the claim, stating they had not encountered any fuel stations accepting ZiG. Others called on Mukungunugwa to provide verifiable evidence, including specific locations where such transactions are taking place.

As of the time of reporting, no filling stations had been identified as accepting ZiG for fuel purchases, leaving the assertion unsubstantiated. The lack of clarity has intensified public calls for transparency, especially at a time when confidence in the practical usability of the local currency remains under scrutiny.

The conversation continues to unfold online, reflecting broader concerns about the real-world adoption of ZiG in everyday economic activity.
