Construction of the Mosi-oa-Tunya Cricket Oval in Victoria Falls is gathering momentum, with authorities expressing confidence that the venue will host its first domestic matches by August. The facility is now more than 80 percent complete, while work on the centre wicket has reached an advanced stage, nearing 90 percent.

The project, which began in May 2024, is rapidly transforming into one of Zimbabwe’s key sporting landmarks ahead of the 2027 Cricket World Cup, which the country will co-host with South Africa and Namibia.

From Degraded Land to Modern Sports Facility
What was once a heavily degraded sand extraction site has been transformed into a thriving sporting complex. A recent inspection tour revealed significant progress, with major structures such as grandstands, the players’ pavilion, media facilities, and medical and doping centres already built.

Contractors are now focusing on roofing and final finishes as deadlines approach, signaling that the project is entering its final phase.
The stadium is part of a broader integrated tourism resort plan designed to expand Victoria Falls’ appeal beyond its natural attractions. The development will include a central business district, conference facilities, a tourism school, a golf estate, and medical tourism services.

This initiative aligns with government efforts to diversify tourism offerings and drive economic growth through sports tourism, particularly within the Masuwe Special Economic Zone.

Boost for World Cup and Economic Targets
The new facility is expected to play a key role in Zimbabwe’s preparations for the 2027 Cricket World Cup. Beyond sport, it is also projected to contribute to the country’s ambitious US$5 billion tourism and hospitality industry target.

Officials say the project demonstrates how infrastructure development can support broader national goals, including job creation and regional development.

Officials Applaud Rapid Progress
During the tour, senior government officials and Zimbabwe Cricket leadership commended the pace and quality of work at the site. They highlighted the project as a model for other sporting bodies, noting how quickly the transformation has taken place.

The development is also expected to open new opportunities for young athletes in surrounding communities, particularly by providing access to modern sporting facilities.
