Johannesburg – Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, 28, the son of Zimbabwe’s late former president Robert Mugabe, is set to appear in a Johannesburg court today facing attempted murder charges.

Mugabe was arrested last Thursday after a 23-year-old man was shot and critically wounded at his Hyde Park residence. The victim, who reportedly worked as a gardener at the property, had been absent for several months prior to the incident. An altercation between Mugabe and the man is said to have preceded the shooting.

He is expected to appear alongside a 33-year-old co-accused at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court. Police have not yet recovered the firearm allegedly used, but both suspects were tested for gunshot residue. Authorities also seized a vehicle fitted with illegal police sirens from the property.

This is the latest in a series of legal issues for Chatunga Mugabe. In August 2024, he was arrested for disorderly conduct along the Beitbridge–Harare highway after being found with a knife. In June 2023, he faced allegations of leading a violent assault on illegal gold miners at his mother’s farm in Mazowe, leaving several injured. His brother, Robert Junior, has also faced repeated legal challenges in Zimbabwe.
