Brigadier-General Dr Million Ndlovu inspires Lupane youth through Sports

LUPANE — Brigadier-General Dr Million Ndlovu has called on young people in Lupane to embrace education, discipline, sport and entrepreneurship as pathways to a better future, as he hosted the inaugural Gatsheniville Extravaganza at St Paul’s Mission in Gatsheni.
Held on September 26, 2026, under the theme “Gatsheniville: From Lupane to the World,” the community event brought together young footballers, netball players, entrepreneurs, musicians and residents in a celebration of talent, community development and youth empowerment.
The extravaganza, hosted by Dr Ndlovu, was built around the belief that young people from rural communities can overcome socio-economic challenges and make an impact beyond their immediate surroundings.
For many of the youths attending the event, Dr Ndlovu’s own journey provided a powerful example.
A son of the Gatsheni community, Dr Ndlovu has risen through the military ranks to become a Brigadier-General, while also pursuing higher education and attaining a doctorate.
His achievements in the military, academia and agricultural development have made his journey a symbol of discipline, perseverance and continuous self-improvement.
The sporting programme featured soccer and netball competitions, giving young athletes an opportunity to demonstrate their skills while developing teamwork, leadership, discipline and confidence.
But Dr Ndlovu’s vision for the extravaganza extended beyond sport.
The event incorporated a business exposition, bringing entrepreneurs and businesses into contact with the community and exposing young people to opportunities in entrepreneurship and enterprise development.
Music and entertainment also formed part of the programme, providing a platform for local creative talent while adding a cultural dimension to the gathering.
The combination of sport, business and entertainment was designed to provide young people with constructive alternatives to idleness, substance abuse and other social challenges affecting communities.
Gatsheniville secretary-general Princess Sibanda said the initiative was aimed at creating opportunities for young people while encouraging them to make positive choices.
The youth drug and substance abuse crisis has become a growing concern in communities across Zimbabwe, making initiatives that provide young people with constructive activities increasingly important.
For Dr Ndlovu, the extravaganza was also an opportunity to give back to the community that shaped his early life.
His presence as host gave the event a strong personal dimension, with his own story demonstrating that determination, education and discipline can open doors irrespective of one's background.
The event therefore went beyond a conventional community sports tournament.
The football pitch and netball court became platforms for teaching teamwork and discipline, while the business exhibition exposed young people to entrepreneurship and economic opportunities.
The gathering also brought together different generations, allowing older residents to interact with young people and share experiences, while youths were given access to role models and professionals from different fields.
For Gatsheni, Dr Ndlovu’s journey offered a particularly important message.
His rise from a rural community in Lupane to senior military leadership and academic achievement demonstrated that success is not exclusively the preserve of those born in major cities.
Instead, the Gatsheniville Extravaganza sought to reinforce the idea that rural communities can produce leaders, professionals, entrepreneurs, athletes and creatives capable of competing on the national and international stage.
The theme — “From Lupane to the World” — captured that ambition.
Through the event, Dr Ndlovu sought to encourage young people to identify and develop their talents while remaining committed to education, discipline and responsible citizenship.
The extravaganza also strengthened community bonds by bringing families, young people, entrepreneurs, sports enthusiasts and artists together around a common cause.
