HARARE — President Emmerson Mnangagwa has conferred Provincial Hero status on late businessman Wicknell Chivayo, two days after he died in a helicopter crash in Marondera.
The honour was announced on Friday by Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training Minister Tino Machakaire during proceedings at Chivayo’s family home in Gletwin, Harare.
Machakaire said the recognition was linked to Chivayo’s contribution to society, including his philanthropic activities. ([Herald Online][1])
Mnangagwa later visited the family to offer condolences to relatives and mourners. ZBC reported that the President described Chivayo as a friend and said the businessman’s work and contribution to society had informed the decision to confer the honour.
Chivayo, 43, his wife Lucy Muteke and four other people died when their helicopter crashed in the Marondera area on Wednesday, September 30. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.
The crash has triggered widespread mourning, with political leaders, business associates, churches and members of the public paying tribute to the businessman.
The Provincial Hero status means Chivayo's funeral will receive state support associated with the honour.
