Car Dealer Arrested Over Fatal Dog Attack In Harare’s Southerton

A Harare car dealer has been arrested in connection with the death of a 39-year-old man who was fatally mauled by four dogs in Southerton last week.

Gilbert Rumbwere, 44, was arrested on Tuesday, September 29, nearly a week after Malcom Takudzwa Muzavazi was attacked along a footpath near ZESA Holdings and a car dealership.

The fatal attack occurred on September 24 between 6pm and 6.30pm.

Police said the dogs were being kept at the car sale and were under the supervision of a private security guard when they were released from their kennels for feeding.

The attack resulted in Muzavazi sustaining fatal injuries.

Rumbwere’s arrest follows the earlier arrests of security guard Mannex Svova, 21, and car sale co-owner Itai Tamirepi, 43, as police continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Police Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed Rumbwere’s arrest and warned dog owners and handlers to ensure their animals are securely confined and properly controlled.

“All dog owners should exercise responsibility and ensure that their dogs are properly secured and controlled at all times to prevent attacks on members of the public,” Nyathi said.

Police also urged members of the public to report stray or aggressive dogs to the authorities, the SPCA or the nearest police station.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding Muzavazi’s death are continuing.

The arrests are not, in themselves, proof of criminal guilt, and the suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
