184 Passengers Evacuated After Bomb Threat At South African Airport

By Staff Reporter

SOUTH AFRICA – All 184 passengers aboard an aircraft were safely evacuated at King Phalo Airport in KuGompo City, formerly East London, on Wednesday following a bomb threat made by an unidentified caller.

The threat triggered an emergency security operation involving police bomb disposal experts, explosive detection dogs and several emergency response teams.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said the threat was received through a telephone call from an unknown person using a private number.

Police immediately activated a multidisciplinary response team to assess the situation and establish whether the reported bomb threat was credible.

The operation involved the Bomb Disposal Unit, K9 explosive detection dogs, hostage negotiators, Disaster Management personnel, airport security and Emergency Medical Services.

Gantana confirmed that all 184 passengers had safely disembarked from the aircraft following the alert.

The aircraft remained at the airport as authorities carried out security procedures and investigated the circumstances surrounding the threat.

Police are working to establish the identity of the caller and determine whether the warning was genuine.

“The scene is being managed by the relevant authorities, and investigations into the origin of the threat are ongoing,” Gantana said.

Authorities had not disclosed whether any suspicious device had been discovered or released further details about the incident by the time of publication.

The incident comes amid heightened concern over aviation security following bomb scares that have disrupted airport operations in the region.
